Logging and sawmills in the forest of the Midwest
While
the destination of those who emigrated from Norway in the earlier years was
mainly the Midwest prairies, most of the later emigrants from the southern
area went to the cities. But some settled in areas outside the towns:
The Rasmus brothers (right) and Tom Bjelland (left) from Kvinesdal went to
America in 1925 or 1926. Their destination was North Minnesota where they
worked with timber all year round. In the summer they worked at the sawmill
and in the winter as lumberers in the forests. They returned to Norway after
three years in America.
